Hello, everybody,

you may have noticed that I've had to fix several separate cases now of
code that assumed some optional feature was turned on, but wasn't
protected by the appropriate #ifdef. Please try to be a bit more careful
as you add code, so this doesn't turn into a regular maintenance job.
