As a matter of fact, map3d_xy() is a bit of a mess already as it is.
It does two unrelated jobs rolled into one function call. This
will need some cleanup eventually. But maybe not right now...

No. Using 'int' for this is a placebo. It may appear to cure the worst
of the symptoms, but that's more by coincidence and belief in the cure
than by design.
