I recently compiled the gnuplot6 release
candidate. (Thank you - exciting to see!)
I did not want to clutter my system with
all the required dev packages, and used a
Docker container for isolation. That worked
well, here are instructions if anyone wants
to try it as well:

(This was written over the weekend, and hence
does not yet take Dima's hints regarding Qt
into account, but there is no doubt that, with
the right package names, the Qt terminal would
build as well.)
In any case, I thought it was a good experience,
and one that I can generally recommend.
