Units for GPVAL_TERM variables?

I was wondering what the "units" for the GPVAL_TERM
variables are. GPVAL_TERM_XSIZE, for instance, seems
to be 20*(horizontal pixel count). What determines the
multiplier?

There are no units.
These are coordinates in the current terminal's coordinate space.
Depending on how the terminal works, this may or may not map
1-to-1 onto pixels.  And for vector terminals clearly it does not.
