first of all let me say thank you for your ongoing support regarding
gnuplot, a program I love a lot due to it's ease of using and it's
functionality.
I just installed the latest release from the ftp.gnuplot.info page and had
to notice that for some reason M$ does not accept the help - file, saying:

The C:\UTIL\gnuplot\bin\wgnuplot.hlp help file was created for a language
not supported by your version of Windows.

Maybe you already got a dozend of pointers saying the same thing - maybe
not. Anyway, if you know how to solve this, please let me know.

The announcement has been already posted to many sites ... and the 1st
reaction on comp.text.tex was about exactly this wrong link. So we must
ensure it gets working.

 Yep - the faq directory from the ftp site is gone; it wasn't quite up to
 date anyway.

 I will remove the UCC web site; or should I instead set up a mirror from
 SF/gnuplot.info? I need to keep the ftp site, though.

not there on sf per wget.  it was accomplished before with a symlink.  my 
preference would be to point the announcement to /faq than /faq.html

I believe this is mirrored from lars's ftp repository.  Again, I'd be

The html documentation.  The links are still broken in
  http://www.gnuplot.info/docs/gnuplot.html
My autoconf or something appears broken, so I can't make pdf, etc.

Do you mean a rebuild of html documentation, or do you mean a 
rebuild of the demo site files?

Some of these are just due to inconsistent spelling.
I wish I had thought of adding back missing vowels to the
file names before version 4 went out (fillcrvs->fillcurves, etc).

	These are due to some rough edges in the perl
	script run by "make html".  Some of the output demo 
	pages require a bit of hand editing. I thought that I
	had fixed the prob*.dem files, but maybe not.  I'll
	have another look.

Ok, how do you get ./configure again?  I thought I remembered a
thread on beta about this, but I can't find it.  I'm sure there
must be a good reason it is not in CVS.

them, in that there isn't a 404 anymore.  But we might want to
replace the missing examples from demo/.  I couldn't find these in
my records, but maybe someone else knows what was supposed to happen

files as gp400{os2, win}.zip contain:

Yes, but I've created htdocs/ftp which I can mirror with http.  This is just 
an idea: we can do this however we like.  But I was thinking it would be 
nice to have some easy way of putting stuff into ftp.gnuplot.info.  What I 
did last night was do a little pre-4.0 tarball just for a trial which I 
threw into ftp:/pub/gnuplot/current.

Any thoughts on how you think the ftp repository should work?  I like it's 
archival nature, but there are lots of ways to accomplish this idea.

we're through with it.

Announcements to the major relevant places (both the old and the new user
mailing list, the newsgroup, the SF "News" posting system, and the people 
who are watching the file release) have been sent out.

Remaining thing(s) to do: 

* those of you closely affiliated with external sites / user groups should
probably tell them about it.  E.g. Petr or somebody should tell the
Octave guys.

* Somebody(tm) will have to take responsibility for freshmeat page on
gnuplot and update it.  It appears to be ownerless right now.  Guess
I might as well do it myself.

 I have uploaded a pgp signature for the release tarball, plus various
 documentation packages to SF.

 I have also updated ftp://ftp.ucc.ie/pub/gnuplot/, IIRC all mirror
 sites get the stuff from there (I'm certain about CTAN and mirror.ac.uk,
 the Australian sites probably too).

 Is there anything else that needs to be done? HBB? Have the announcements
 gone out yet?

Grrr... I *hate* it that this kind of stuff always pops up past the
last minute ;-(

I've succeeded in making a suitable packae only after hacking configure.in
and letting the DJGPP version of autoconf/automake regenerate pretty much
everything.  The telltale symptom is this, at the end of 'configure':

  Enable generation of JPEG files
  Enable generation of PNG files
    using old driver
  Enable TTF fonts with gd driver
  Enable pm3d
  Enable filledboxes

I.e. it did find both libpng and libz (--> so old png.trm can be used),
but it failed to confirm GdImagePng() in GD (which quite definitely
does exists), because that link fails to have a -lz anywhere in it.

This is the compile/link line it tries to run (from config.log, linewraps
mine):

configure:9799: gcc -o conftest.exe -g -O2 -fno-inline-functions   \
  -I/dev/env/DJDIR/local/include   conftest.c -lgd  -lgrx20 -lpc   \
  -ljpeg -lfreetype -lpng >&5

But because there's no -lz, that fails:

e:/djgpp/local/lib/libpng.a(png.o)(.text+0x2f5):png.c: \
 undefined reference to `_crc32'

[... and lots more ...]

Now, if I remember Ethan's comments about this issue from a while back
correctly, I think he was saying that the "obvious" fix to this (putting
-lz into the links by changing configure.in) would break on at least some
other platforms.

In the light of this, I think I won't put up another tarball right now.
The risk of it breaking other platforms is just too high.  Instead, I'll
put a note into the DJGPP binary package's "README.dj2" file about the
little hacks to configure.in needed to fix this.

That's of course a silly one.  It probably won't happen to those platforms
that have shared libraries with internal dependencies (ie: Linux).

I'm in the process of building the official 4.0.0 binary with DJGPP, which
will use current version of all 5 libraries (z, png, jpeg, freetype and
GD).  I'll watch out for that gotcha.  If we find that to be strictly
necessary, I guess it's still time to squeeze in yet another silent update
of the source tarball.

As result there were unresolved references from libpng, as -lz should be
