I am trying to change the size of the font on the xtic labels. I am using the eps latex terminal but I have not found anywhere how to do it.
The size seems to be invariant under the size of the plot so if a make a graph smaller the labels of xtics look bigger relative to the plot.

See "help set xtics" and look for the "font" option.
