Gnuplot 5.0.5 with pdfcairo is producing plots with Type 3 fonts. Adding "set noxtics" and "set noytics" to the same script on the same system removes that Type 3 font (as assessed by pdffonts).

font-config customization to avoid Type 3 fonts is outside the scope of gnuplot code. The same potential problem exists for other programs that access fonts via font-config.
