I've been using GJukebox on my RH system for a couple of years now and love the front end. It is hands down the best jukebox program out there and I have looked at all of them (to the best of my knowledge). What makes this program really stand out, IMO, is the random playlist feature with the ability to request songs that supersede it and the album art browsing. These 2 single features are lacking in almost every other system out there.
However, my complaints are it is not very admin friendly for non-unix users. I have built a couple of systems for friends and family and none are able to maintain the system on their own.
I use OS X for all my non-jukebox related computing and even have my MP-3 library on an OS X server that GJukebox uses.
I'm looking for some programers that would be interested in taking the bulk of this project and changing it to work with iTunes as the back end and player. What I envision is leaving the features more or less untouched (changing just those that would be required by iTunes) but:
- Replace SQL database with hooks to iTunes. Use the XML files perhaps as the database. Let iTunes manage and play the songs and let this interface simply be a web based interface for iTunes
- Allow streaming (hooks to squeezebox?)
- Allow the reading of album art information from the MP-3 file (for files with embedded art)
- Allow the ability to play MP4's (AAC), this should be a given with iTunes as the back end.
I am not a programmer but would be willing to help in any way possible on a project of this type, even with funding assistance.
