The gutenprint software supplies a set of drivers, it does not set up your printer for you, for that you need to access the drivers via your normal printer configuration software. The steps are as below, but your system may be different, so this is only a guide based on the very limited information in your request email. First, you need to download the package. Presumably your OS does not provide a package, so I assume you are using MacOSX? For CUPS, the name of printer shows as follows: HP DeskJet 940C Once you add it (and thus create a printer queue) you can set defaults with CUPS or whatever printer configuration program you use, and select this printer for printing from applications. Hello, After installing Mojave on my Mac Mini late 2014 my printer no longer worked and Canon no longer supports it. I downloaded Gutenprint 5.2.14. This was simple and quick. I added the printer and the driver showed up immediately. Test print worked great. Thanks!!! |

The gutenprint 5.2 user manual only has a note on page 28 that makes me think that ICC profiles are clearly supported/possible, but no explanation on how to include them. Ghostscript does have parameters to supply icc profile to it, e.g.: "-sOutputICCProfile", but there is no way to configure the parameter via CUPS (or at least i have not found a way to do it via the normal CUPS weeb interface or anything else documented). Hello Clemens, I see the printer has the following language support: HP PCL3 GUI While there is no developer for PCL at the moment, you could try some of the generic PCL drivers included in gutenprint. The way I usually do this is to print a series of pairwise narrow bands, using the darker ink at a fixed lower density (maybe 25%) and sweeping the lighter ink from zero to, 100% (you don't want to saturate the paper). Do it at the highest resolution offered by the printer so that drop sizes are as small as possible, and use Ordered dither with only the smallest drop size. Let's say that's around 0.4, from left to right. At that point, you're using 40% light ink, which is matching up with the (constant) 25% darker ink, so the ratio between the two inks is 40:25 or 8:5 -- you need 8 parts light ink to match 5 parts dark ink. Remember that the third number in each group (1.0) is the gamma -- you always want this set to 1.0 to get linear behavior. It's worth checking that by printing the same pattern, but with a much narrower range of light ink.
