Carrying this over from another thread so it doesn't get messy. >> >> On Oct 11, 2019, at 12:47 PM, Steve Letter via Gimp-print-devel <gim...@li...> wrote: >> >> I know Apple is going to require me to submit my builds for inspection before it will install but thought that was still a future requirement. It is possible that may be the problem as I have never seen the error message that was quoted. I haven't installed Catalina, and am not planning to do so for a while as I don't have any test computers. I know that all apps must now be 64 bit which was certainly a factor in Gutenprint dropping all 32 bit binaries. That is indeed the case. Everything must now carry an approval stamp from Apple saying it is safe to install. After searching a bit, I found the following: Seemingly, the most on target and important reference is the following from the Apple Development Conference: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2019/703/ Overview of Catalina, 10.15.x is on the Apple Developer page here: https://developer.apple.com and https://developer.apple.com/videos/wwdc2019/ I have had no experience with https://mrmacintosh.com but the following looks like it might also be of help https://mrmacintosh.com/macos-10-15-catalina-updated-index-of-need-to-know-changes-links/ Reviewing the mac OS installer package, there may be a problem with: 1. The uninstall-guttenprint.command and the Gutenprint Utility for EPSON Inkjet Printers.command. I'm not sure these can be signed or pass Apples notorization. 2. I have no clue about the libusb that is contained in the installer as it is a one step removed from pure Gutenprint code. Likewise, I am not sure whether we can include the libusb--1.0.22.high_sierra.bottle.tar.gz. That is produced by the third party app "brew" which is used in the Gutenprint package. All this said, I hope that submitting a disk image with at least the installer package for Apple's notarization and getting the stamp of approval is a quick and easy process so it can be re-released. An announcement of some sort would seem to be in order here once things are straightened out. I don't have Catalina installed on my computer and cannot do any testing. Upgrading will have to wait as I have some critical things I need to get done on a stable system. -- Matt |

Hello, dear developers of Gutenprint, My name is Eugene. First of all, I would like to express all my respect and appreciation for such enormously huge and super useful software. You really helped to many people run their printing on a high level. Bravo! I do sublimation by using Epson 1400 (1410). Although, this printer is pretty old but does the job great and I really happy with the price point as small business. Currently, I have 4 same printers printing with the same sublimation ink and paper. Recently, I've noticed that they provide slightly different printing results. I decided to adjust it by using the Color Manager. However, it is pretty limited and I then found Gutenprint. I was surprised by the options. Unfortchantly, I couldn't use the latest 5.3.3 version for my Mac OS 10.14.6. I print from photoshop and when it comes to select the Printer Features it doesn't show me the setting. I attached the screenshot just in case. I also tried to print from Word with Gutenprint but it shows an error. I tried version Gutenprint 5.2.15 and it works. However, I think it might miss new features which been added to 5.3.3. I when through all forum support topics and didn't find any solution. I know you might just tell me to create a topic and await your response. But I decided to test my luck and contact you directly. Thank you. Best regard. Eugene. |

(I tried to find where these are set in the >> sources, but didn't.) > > This all is set by configure.ac. I *thought* I did it correctly, but > it's possible I didn't. I am reading diffs. This really makes my head hurt and I am someone who more or less understands this. A few things (which if you don't want to deal with, I totally understand!): 0) This has been in the all the 5.3.x releases, so we are where we are. 1) There is no tag in git for 5.2.15. I used -pre1 instead. 2) In configure.ac, there is talk of an error in preparing 5.2.8 and moving from shlib major 2 to shlib major 4. But 5.2.15 has pushdef([GUTENPRINT_CURRENT_INTERFACE], [10]) pushdef([GUTENPRINT_BINARY_AGE], [8]) which is the 2.8 that I'm seeing in build 5.12.15. That seems good 3) There is MICRO_VERSION in configure.ac for the package version, but I don't see any micro version for the lib. I see later you are choosing not to use it. That's fine, but the MICRO_VERSION doc guidance to increment it for lib changes is off base; it represents package versions. 4) I think the rules as expressed in configure.ac for changing vars due to incompatible changes are wrong. It would have been far more helpful of libtool to have people bump the major and set minor to 0 when there is an incompatible change, as this is easier to understand. But this is the key formula: dnl The .soname version is (GCI - GBA).GBA which means that "GCI++; GBA++" results in no change to MAJOR and MINOR++. So, when we want to bump MAJOR, we want the new GCI-GBA to be the old GCI-GBA + 1. configure.ac says: dnl 3. if interfaces have been deleted or changed *incompatibly*, set dnl GCI = GBA + 1; dnl GBA = 0; and I think that should be dnl GCI = (GCI-GBA) + 1; which is pretty counterintuitive. But the libtool docs say GGI = GCI + 1 GBA = 0 as I read them at https://www.gnu.org/software/libtool/manual/html_node/Updating-version-info.html and that will result in a change from 2.8.0 to 11.0.0, which does not seem sensible, so I suspect I am confused on some point here. 5) Looking at this diff git diff -r gutenprint-5_2_15-pre1 -r gutenprint-5_3_0 configure.ac and semantically separating out unidiff pushdef([GUTENPRINT_NAME], [gutenprint]) pushdef([GUTENPRINT_MAJOR_VERSION], [5]) -pushdef([GUTENPRINT_MINOR_VERSION], [2]) -pushdef([GUTENPRINT_MICRO_VERSION], [15]) -pushdef([GUTENPRINT_EXTRA_VERSION], [-pre1]) +pushdef([GUTENPRINT_MINOR_VERSION], [3]) +pushdef([GUTENPRINT_MICRO_VERSION], [0]) +pushdef([GUTENPRINT_EXTRA_VERSION], []) -pushdef([GUTENPRINT_CURRENT_INTERFACE], [10]) -pushdef([GUTENPRINT_BINARY_AGE], [8]) +pushdef([GUTENPRINT_CURRENT_INTERFACE], [9]) +pushdef([GUTENPRINT_BINARY_AGE], [0]) -pushdef([GUTENPRINTUI2_CURRENT_INTERFACE], [1]) +pushdef([GUTENPRINTUI2_CURRENT_INTERFACE], [2]) pushdef([GUTENPRINTUI2_BINARY_AGE], [0]) It looks like the rule as documented was followed for libgutenprint, resulting in a change from 2.8 to 9.0. Assuming the ui2 lib had an ABI break, the rule wasn't followed, but this case shows how the rule doesn't make sense, as GCI=1/GBA=0 is stable under the rule. What I would do is put in comments about the desired major and minor and set: GBA = minor GCI = major + GBA basically backing out libtool's logic, and verify that the shlib numbers are as expected in the builds. My dim impression is that this GCI/GBA scheme is actually helpful for some systems that aren't ELF, even though for ELF/a.out it is majorly confusing. |

I just tried to 'make check' 5.3.3. It failed generating ppds because it filled my filesystem. I'm using a RAM/VM-backed tmpfs, which is 12G in size. I remember having to up the ramdisk size earlier, but 12G seems like quite a lot, even in 2019. I wonder if there is any reasonable way to prune what is tested, or generate/check with a smaller working size, or something else? (Yes, I of course have bigger disks, but I also don't want to put this kind of write workload on SSD; that's a lot of why my pkgsrc builds are in a working directory in the tmpfs.) |

The more recent CP-M1 is not supported. My research shows it uses a command language similar to the CP-D90DW, but requires a unique host-side image processing library (libCPM1lupinus) that is unique to that model series. > If needed, I can provide a cups driver for both to make it easier to > add the D90 and M1 printers. I encourage Mitsubishi to publicly release CUPS drivers for their printers, but unless they are provided in source code form (under a suitable license) it is likely impossible to to have it incorporated into Gutenprint.
