[Gimp-print-devel] Adding a driver for OKi MC362dn and fix bugs

Hello,

I own an OKi MC362dn printer which has a driver from OKi with a few 
bugs. Specifically, when I want to print 2 copies of a document I end up 
with 4 copies printed, if I ask for 3 copies, I end up with 9, ... and 
the same for nup printing (2 pages per sheet gives me 4, ...)

I just realized that the official driver from OKi was free software. 
it's downloadable here:

I suppose it makes it free software.

Would it be possible to include the driver in gutemprint, and fix it at 
the same time ?

I looked at the PPD file, but I have no knowledge about driver coding 
except it's postscript and I have some basic knowledge about that. I 
couldn't find anywhere anything about nup printing or the number of 
copies. is this really handled at the driver level, or is it handled at 
the CUPS level. Can the driver fix those bugs ?

This isn't going to be enough; per shellcheck, substitutions such as

${gutenprint_base//./_}

don't work in POSIX shell.

There are some minor unnecessary bashisms in a few /bin/sh scripts.
Basically, [[ is not specified as part of POSIX sh, and while it in bash
has slightly different semantics than [, I am pretty sure that's not
relevant in these cases.

This is really just s/[[/[/ and s/]]/]/.

Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, based on my long term usage of the Canon Pixma iP5000 with a Macintosh, all the functionality that you described worked just fine using the drivers that were supplied by first Canon, then by Apple. Apple stopped providing this driver as of MacOS X High Sierra. Just to clarify one point, the 5 print quality levels I described were all there for all the paper types. I regularly used a setting that was between "Normal" and "Draft" for plain paper. This gave me the best compromise between acceptable quality and reduced ink usage. Regarding the ability to display the ink levels, there are two situations where this is important. The first is if I go into the print driver features which is what I would do if I anticipated needing to run a big print job (such as when printing a tax return) and I didn't want to run out of ink in the middle of the job. The second situation is the ability of the print driver to automatically warn you that one of the inks is getting low. This is important not just so ink doesn't run out in the middle of a job and ruin the job, but also so the print head doesn't get damaged by running the printer with a dry print head which can burn out the print head.

merely the current features of the gutenprint driver. The iP5000 is
not one I have had any feedback on, so it is good to hear that it
works at least in a basic sense.
On ink levels: as far as I know, that is not a feature of the
gutenprint driver, and would require some back-channel communication
via some other utilities. I am aware of such utilities for Epson
printers but do not think there are any for Canon. If anyone knows
different, please post, but this is not something the gutenprint
driver provides.
I would love to check with you whether the gutenprint driver is
feature-complete, and then move on to seeing what we can improve (if
possible).
Does gutenprint support all the media types and resolution types that
you are expecting. As far as I remember, I took Windows printjobs and
reverse engineered the capabilities from those, so if the Windows

There is a separate option to enable or disable "borderless" operation.  
On Linux systems, it is hidden under the "Advanced" or "Printer Features 
Common" section of the print options.

When there is an inquiry regarding a laser printer, we suggest using the generic PCL driver as that is the printer language normally associated with lasers.  It turns out that your printer is one of the lasers that doesn't work with the PCL drivers.  I did some digging and found that openprinting.org lists a third party developed a driver for your printer.  Looking at the build and installation instructions for the driver, it would require quite a knowledge of compiling code.  Even then, it appears that the workflow is very old and quite possibly would not work in Catalina.

I wrote a while back, and I was wondering if by any chance anyone had found any success using either a generic or other company driver to print to a KonicaMinolta 4690MF with macOS Catalina?

The generic PCL drivers appear to work at first, but nothing happens.  I think the mftr’s driver was a simple postscript one.  Is there a stripped down generic that might work?

I’d be grateful for any help, and if there’s a cost to develop a driver, I’d be more than willing to pay to help out.

I hope we can help you Roy.  The usbtb-1.0.17 is not a printer driver.  It is communications software only  Its primary use was for enabling parallel-to-USB adapters and more or less of benefit when using Mac OS X 10.3 or OS X 10.4.

What you are seeing is PostScript which is the default output for Macs.  To help you select the correct Gutenprint package to install, I need to know what version of Mac OS X you are using on your "old" Mac.

There are no specific drivers for this printer.  It is listed as being able to use PCL 5e or PCL 6.  You could try the Generic PCL 5 or Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printers.  The available options may or may not be the same as would normally be found with the Windows drivers.

Since the 5.3.3 release, more work has been done with the UP-DR80MD and 
I'm told that as of mid-November (2019) it works quite well.

Does this only happen at particular printing resolutions, or does it

I have an old iMac running macOS 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and an HP DeskJet 840C printer.  I print “wirelessly” from a more modern iMac under Catalina v10.15.3 (19D76) to the Snow Leopard machine which is connected to the printer via a USB cable.

On a previous iMac this arrangement worked just fine using one of the Gutenberg drivers but, alas, i cannot remember which version.  I no longer own that iMac but I do still have access to it should that be the way forward,

I have now connected another old iMac to the network and, when I tried to print, it returned the advice that there were no drivers and that the automated search of Apple found none.  This is what I expected, of course.

I then went to Gutenberg and downloaded usbtb-1.0.17.uni.dmg as advised on the Mac paragraph <http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_Download.php> and installed the driver.

Both iMacs can now see the printer but when I print a test page I get one page showing:

% I PS-Adobe-3.0 % APL_DCS_Encoding: UTF8 % APLProducer: (Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549 …

The text runs across the A4 Portrait page but at each % symbol the text drops down a line.  There may be further text after the Build number but it would be off the paper.

The test page fails to print and the paper just spews out blank pages until I turn off the printer.

If you can offer any advice I would be most grateful.  Am I using the correct driver from your website?  Is there any thing I can copy off the other iMac which did work  and, if so, just what?

There seem to  be a lot of variables.  My understanding is that the problem occurs during the use of Ubuntu.  What about the Mac computers, is there the same problem with the Mac computers?  Does one print black on one computer and fine on the other?  Perhaps the best test would be to print a test page on all of the platforms (operating systems).  That should narrow it down fairly quickly.

I tried to print on the Sony UP-DR80MD printer using gutenprint 5.3.3 and
it doesn't seem to work.
The job is submitted to the queue and stays in processing status
indefinitely. Sometimes it's pending but the printer never moves. Is there
a trick with these printers in the cups setup or serial number has to be
set?

Hi,

If you want to just control the overall amount of ink (without
changing the per-channel utilization), the Density
setting is most appropriate for that purpose.

First off, thanks for your work on the Gutenprint drivers, steep learning curve but very interesting :-)

I have a Epson P800 printer and I'm trying to figure out how to control the ink amount deposit on the paper. 

I work with digital negatives that require more or less ink deposit to control more or less density.  

Which setting allows the most control of ink deposit?

I think most if not all of the current printers from Epson do also.   My Epson WF-7720 All-in-One is also based on 300 dpi.  While I can't speak for all of Epson's printers that support Mobile printing use multiples of 300 dpi rather than 360 dpi, the previous standard.   This *may* become a thorny issue as to whether or not to support them. They can also be used as wireless networked printers.  Everything may be fine as long as Epson provides drivers for the printer for the OS that is used.
