Yes, you can do this in model XML file for the printer. These live inside of the /Library/Printers/ gutenprint and deep inside those folders in MacOS. I think you can do this live (aka, just changing the XMLs) it’s been a while since I did this though. Would it be possible to include Canon TS8200 series in the software? Thanks, you guys are doing a great job! |

Hello, My brother is a Debian developer and he recommended me to use your Gutenprint software in my attempts to use my Epson Pro 7900 printer. The black channel on the printhead is dead, so what I need is some kind of software that can ‘trick’ the printer to be using the green or orange channel for black. Is that possible with your software? If so, should I be installing CUPS to do so? I am using Mac OS X Best regards, Ronald |

Do you have any error messages from the CUPS debug log to tell us what went wrong? If you have a linux system you could try there (I assume you use USB connection) and tell us if the issue is really with the driver, or whether it is an issue with MacOSX. I seem to remember many people using the Gxxx drivers already, so I would like to check whether this is an edge case, or unrelated to the specific driver. very pleased to discover what you are doing even if it didn’t help me at > this moment! > Best regards, Gernot Hassenpflug -- Protea Wines Japan Tel: 070-5550-9076 https://www.proteawines.jp |

I may be able to use the programs from the older dev platform. The problems are building the package and disk image. Gutenprint and all the pieces compile and link apparently correctly. So I will try to cobble together a working distribution this weekend. The latest installer will work on macos 11 Big Sur. You can download it at https://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/files/gutenprint-5.3/5.3.3/gutenprint-5.3.3_rev.dmg/download Please note that if you are using one of the new Apple computers with the M1 chip, you will also need to install Rosetta. I use Kyocera FS-1030D. Kyocera doesn’t support this printer with updated drivers. My last printer I used for my Kyocera was from Gutenprint. I used this driver successfully until my last update to Mac OS Big Sur. (11.1) With this update I have not been able to find any drivers for my FS-1030D. Will Gutenprint or Gimp-Print have drivers for which can be used for Mac OS Big Sur? Best regards Anders Stavland |

Hello Gernot, Hello Solomon thank you very much for your answers – I‘m sorry for answering late. I do not have a Linux System – I only have Macs with different OSX systems. I can also try the printer with the original driver on an old system which I haven't done yet. (but I think it will be OK because it prints directly from an SD-Card). It is not urgent for me – if you need any further informations of my printer, just tell me how I can help >The most likely explanation here is that your CP790 was inadvertantly >configured to use the standard 'usb' CUPS backend, rather than the >custom 'gutenprint53+usb' backend. What can I do to make the printer use the correct backend ? >If you could confirm the backend that's being used (visible in the >connection URI) that would tell us what the next steps need to be. Where shall I look … I can send Screenshots from my system preferences and from my printer configuration. Would this already be helpful ? or do I have to go deeper into the system via the terminal ? I‘ll be back at my office on monday where I can have a look at the printer. best regards, Clemens Am Fr., 8. However, I don't have access to either the CP790 or ES40, so it's certianly possible a regression has slipped in since these were last tested several years ago. If you could confirm the backend that's being used (visible in the connection URI) that would tell us what the next steps need to be. Hello, I’d be very happy if you can help me getting a Canon Selphy CP790 to work on Mac OSX. I tried in two systems (OSX 10.14 and OSX 10.13) but I wasn’t successful. The Printer is connected via USB-Cable It is recognised in the System Preferences as CP790 on a USB-Port I can choose the Printer in the Preview-Program or any other Program that can print. After having sent away the print order, nothing happens … it would really be great if i could make this printer work … (I was successful with an older Selphy CP510 and a CP710) best regards from Karlsruhe/Germany, Clemens |

Sounds great, I will give these recommendations a try! Your input is greatly appreciated (especially given we have a new baby and we were trying to print photos :) ) Wishing you a happy new year. One question I have is then is there any resource or guide for CUPS density controls? For example, if you see x, y or z, increase or decrease this parameter? Hi Jonathan, Not really, that is general CUPS information, I guess searches are your best bet for what people have been doing for their particular purposes. As I wrote, it is a matter of extensive experimentation to work out per media type at least, and most likely per resolution mode (used for that media), what density corrections are required for each ink for different hue, saturation, and value for each colour, and combination of colours. You could start with a strip of black ink printing evenly from 0% to 100% intensity, and see if you can get an output that matches this. Some areas might need more careful tuning. Then go on to cyan, then magenta, and finally yellow, which is hardest to see. PS quick addendum, the plus Glossy II can use the other 2 photo modes as well, the mode one I listed is solely useable by plusPhoto II though. Hi Gernot, Thanks for this wonderful explanation - I have no background in tuning drivers before so this makes a LOT of sense! One question I have is then is there any resource or guide for CUPS density controls? For example, if you see x, y or z, increase or decrease this parameter? Thanks! Not sure if this is a potential bug? > Hello, I am sure photo printing will not be good without some serious tuning of densities in CUPS, since the Canon driver does not include any calibration of colours. However, maybe you can get better results if I explain the process, what you are saying about resolution is not really how it works. Firstly, the Canon printheads only have resolutions of 300dpi or 600dpi (some have a single mode that is at 1200dpi). So "setting resolution to X dpi" is not what determines the quality. The firmware uses the physical printhead resolution, multi-pass printing and complex algorithms making use of the available physical inks, to print at some "effective resolution". The above process, and/or the possible quality, are different for each media type. Thus, when you select a resolution, you are not seeing a simple "X dpi" name for the resolution, what you see is a "resolution mode" name, such as "High quality (600 DPI)", for example. Each media type has several possible resolution modes associated with it, and hints are given in the drop-down, so that users do not attempt to use, say, plain media modes, with photo media, or vice versa. If a resolution mode is chosen that the firmware does not know about for a particular media type, the printer will generally not print. So to prevent non-printing, if a non-compatible mode is selected in the Canon driver, then there is a forced selection to a similar quality mode accepted by the media. As a result, depending on the other options apart from media type (e.g., double-sided printing), you might not be printing with the mode you think you selected. The only way to be sure is to check the debug logs (setting them up in the CUPS interface). The G1000, G2000, G3000 share a common driver, with the following resolution modes available: A. For plain media 600x600 DPI HIGH 600x600 DPI 300x300 DPI B. For plus Glossy II only 600x600 DPI PHOTO HIGHEST plus Glossy II C. For other photo media 600x600 DPI PHOTO HIGH 600x600 DPI PHOTO D. For envelope and hagaki (postcard) media 600x600 DPI HIGH (Env/Hagaki) 600x600 DPI (Env/Hagaki) If you are trying one of the photo media resolution modes, and it is of poor quality, the tuning of the density of individual inks is probably way off. Tuning is a lot of experimental effort, but you can try with the CUPS density controls for the different channels to see if you can improve matters. Best regards, Gernot Hassenpflug |

There appears to be a bug in one of the critical programs needed to build the Mac Release. I will be reporting it to Apple tomorrow. For the curious, the program is hdiutil. There are some possibilities for a workaround. It will be a few days before I will have time to devote to the build. Steve Letter Sent from my Symbolics Lisp Machine using rmail. |
