Ok, so, I've more or less finished adding rudimentary support for all of the documented Epson Stylus 750 commands to unprint.c. I'm using the 6clr_99L1.PDF file which is publicly available on Epson's website as my basis for the escp2 language should be. It's not a particularly well written document, IMO. It's got several places where it is inconsistant with itself. It looks like a case of careless cut & paste writing. Anyway, I tried to use common sense where the document appeared to lack it. If the 750 truly understands all of the older commands, then unprint.c should be able to unprint any escp2 file (when finished). So, I took a small jpg, ran it through the print plugin set to 720 DPI, ESP750, softweave-mode, and pushed the resulting file back through unprint. One of the first things I noticed was that it generated an unknown command error. gimp-print included an ESC ( K command. What does this command do? It's not listed in my documentation. Is there a better document that describes this stuff, or, is this an undocumented feature? Can we make a document for undocumented features? The other error it generated was a malformed page format error. The page format command ESC ( c should take a 4 byte format string, but the one in the file is an 8 byte string. What does the 8 byte version of this command mean? I also have some other, more general questions. There are two ways to send raster data to a 750. Using "ESC i" or "ESC .". The "." form include a density number which lets you know what horizontal DPI the raster data should be printed at, but, the "i" version does not. What determines the horizontal printing density for the "i" form? I assumed that it would be a function of the relative horizontal units being used. This probably relates to the page format specification uncertainty I mentioned above. And what exactly are the "page management units" good for? There were a couple of other things I wanted to ask, but I think I'll wait until I understand these, and then all may be clear. Eric |

Hi everyone, I've just joined the development team today, and would like to introduce myself. I'm fairly new to Linux, having loaded Red Hat 6.1 last November. I am a software engineer with Lockheed-Martin, working on the ground processing side of Synthetic Aperature Radars. I have 8 years of development experience under Solaris, mostly C++, with a bit of C thrown in, and some experience with Motif. Robert has allowed me to tackle the GUI portion of the plug-in, so I will be learning GTK+ as well as a lot more about printers. I have a strong interest in image processing software in general, and am very interested in quality output from printers. Aside from being a Penguinista, I do a little woodworking, a little watercolor, and am an avid homebrewer. I enjoy reading mysteries in what little spare time remains. I'm looking forward to helping out and meeting all of you. From: "Frank J. Ramsay" <fj...@ma...> Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 15:47:25 -0500 Does anyone have experience getting printers to work under Linux? I just picked up an Epsilon Stylus 860. I want to connect it to my Linux box (I'll put it on my windows machine and use it as a smb share if I have to) I'm running RH 6.0, I can't find anything in linuxconfig and when I try and use the "Red Hat Linux Print System Manager" under the control-panel it can not detect anything on /dev/lp0 /dev/lp1 or /dev/lp2 Does anyone have any ideas? Hi. I'm currently leading a project to enhance the Gimp print plugin on sourceforge.net (the project is named gimp-print). One of our major goals is to improve support for inkjet printers, including Epson. This work will lead to a Ghostscript driver in addition to the Gimp plugin (actually, that's the much more important goal). Currently we do not have support for the Stylus 860, but any information you have on that printer would be very welcome to us. We need information such as number of jets, any particular features of the printer, and so forth. Furthermore, if you install this printer under Windows, we would appreciate a (small!) sample print file from this printer, which will help us understand how to program it. Printing any kind of test pattern would be helpful, but please keep it small (about 1" square is just about right). Please check out our project on Sourceforge (https://sourceforge.net/project/?group_id=1537). You may subscribe to gimp-print-devel or gimp-print-announce if you'd like. -- Robert Krawitz <rl...@al...> http://www.tiac.net/users/rlk/ Tall Clubs International -- http://www.tall.org/ or 1-888-IM-TALL-2 Member of the League for Programming Freedom -- mail lp...@uu... Looks like a great start. I suggest not putting mailto's to us, because these pages will get indexed and those mailto's will be a nice spam trap. Sourceforge has a page that lets you send messages (that get emailed) to individual developers; probably linking to that would be better. Obviously the text needs to be cleaned up some, but that will get fixed... |

Until we get a working loginfo, I've crontabbed the website update. At the moment it's set to hourly so I can see if it works ok. BTW -- Have a look at the state.php3 file. It contains/will contain most of the 'data' such as supported printers. It could do with some notes about the support for each model. For example, instead of=20 'EPSON Stylus Color 850' =3D> '', It wants=20 'EPSON Stylus Color 850' =3D> 'Works only at 360dpi currently.', --=20 <pc...@in...> <http://www.innotts.co.uk/~nicholas/> 2048/BEC44395 1999/08/02 Nicholas C. As of about an hour ago -- The 850 driver is broken for anything above 360dpi. 720dpi microweave produces lots of pages with the top 7 or 8 lines being random characters in several colours (rows of red, blue, etc.). Softweave produces loads of blank pages. 360dpi prints, but produces terrible looking output, looks more like 100 dpi and every 3 cm or so there is a horizontal band of red. Note that the printer is actually an 860, but I don't think much is different internally. --=20 <pc...@in...> <http://www.innotts.co.uk/~nicholas/> 2048/BEC44395 1999/08/02 Nicholas C. Ok, CVS seems to be fully working now. I just committed a very early version of "unprint". It doesn't produce any output, other than error messages, but, it's a start. Maybe tomorrow it will have output... Later, Eric |

You can trigger this to be done automatically by placing a command in the loginfo file in the CVSROOT directory. The CVS documentation explains how to do this. On one of the other sites I maintain we have this in loginfo: ALL $CVSROOT/CVSROOT/cvs-log %s $CVSROOT/CVSROOT/www.list $CVSROOT/CVSROOT/commitlog ^www /bin/sh $CVSROOT/CVSROOT/updateweb.sh %s >> $CVSROOT/CVSROOT/updatelog 2>&1 & And updateweb.sh: date cat sleep 2 cd /u/ale/superk echo cvs -q update -d `echo $1 | awk '{split($0,files);for(i=2;i<=NF;i++){print $1 "/" files[i]}}'` cvs -q update -d `echo $1 | awk '{split($0,files);for(i=2;i<=NF;i++){print $1 "/" files[i]}}'` echo Entering directory /u/ale/superk/`echo $1 | awk '{print $1}'` cd /u/ale/superk/`echo $1 | awk '{print $1}'` make That may be a little fancier than we need. I couldn't find anywhere that suggested this could be automated (can we run cron jobs on sourceforge ?), so this is my current solution ; The WWW site is in cvs (dir www). To then copy the current CVS version into the "live" site, on shell1 (via ssh) /home/groups/gimp-print/updateWebFromCVS.sh is run. This should update the site into our www directory, and then fix permissions so that someone else could do it next time. It is retrieved as anonymous, so you shouldn't need any auth. So, feel free to make changes. --=20 <pc...@in...> <http://www.innotts.co.uk/~nicholas/> 2048/BEC44395 1999/08/02 Nicholas C. On the assumption that something was wrong with my local account, I started unsetting CVS related environment variables. Eventually, I found one that seemed to cause the problem. I had CVS_SERVER set to "env LOGNAME=sharkey cvs" which is different than the default of just "cvs". This setting works with the CVS server I use for work but the Source Forge server balks on it. I think it must be a security setting that they don't allow CVS accounts to access any executables other than cvs. That's true, as I understand it. So you're OK now? |

Date: Sat, 29 Jan 2000 03:01:24 +0000 From: Nicholas Piper <pc...@in...> I've uploaded a first-cut website to http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/gimp-print/. I put it in /gimp-print/ rather than top-level as I thought I'd better wait for a go-ahead. We're a team, we get credit as a team. 3.1 is our work, not any one individuals. Also, work on the GhostScript driver is ongoing. Other than that, it's a good start. Obviously content is low at the moment. I'll have a look in the source in a few moments to see if there is a printer list anywhere (I've not looked at it yet!). Otherwise, could we knock one up ? I wonder if we can have the website under CVS as well... We should probably do so, even if it's a bit clunky, although Marc Lehmann said that he had problems with the CVS server crashing and leaving lock files around when he tried it (something to do with embedded RCS keywords, apparently). |

Looks pretty good to me. Having two navigation bars surrounding the title looks a little silly, though. Why don't you move one of them to the very bottom of the page? > I wonder if we can have the website under CVS as well... I don't see why not. Eric |

I flushed all the globals for real (and I think I cleaned up the memory leaks) in everything except print.c (where it doesn't matter) and print-ps.c (just a couple of FILE *'s, but that also doesn't matter too terribly much). print-escp2.c got the real treatment; I put all the softweave stuff into a struct (shades of C++?). I also got rid of the broken 1440x720 and 2880x720 (aka 1440x720 two-pass) microweave modes. I didn't feel like fixing them; if someone wants to, go ahead. Henryk, could you grab the latest stuff from the repository (print-escp2.c is at 1.48) and see how that works in your Ghostscript driver? If that looks good, I think we can start moving ahead on this. -- Robert Krawitz <rl...@al...> http://www.tiac.net/users/rlk/ Tall Clubs International -- http://www.tall.org/ or 1-888-IM-TALL-2 Member of the League for Programming Freedom -- mail lp...@uu...
