Hi Todd, Yes, I could imagine this being a reasonable feature to surface in the UI. (That said, I'm not the gatekeeper for reasonable, so this is just one opinion.) In terms of ease, I'd agree that a checkbox would be great; that said, you can set this variable in a number of ways which doesn't require a code change to GeoServer.
