The table is using polygon type, and I had been putting in inner rings to make holes in them.  When I stop doing that, they display correctly.

Yes.  I'm using a view to sort by area of bounding box, with largest first.

Thanks, that's definitely more useful. Had just a glance for the moment (10pm here), I don't see anything that would actually sort the data... how are you imposing the sorting?
Did you use a sql view maybe?

I meant real data (sql dump, shapefile) and a full SLD.
