Its the os mastermap topo layer that is set as base layer and the bus stops as the overlay

The field make was in the wrong case
Ive got it working now - thanks for all your help
New problem though
My one and only overlay I have which is a point table of bus stops has an opaque qhite background - and I haven't a clue why - and no its not set to opaque

Should have values like:

· Manmade

You were right I hadn't run the scripts
I have the field in the database now and I have changed the sld to make os_cat upper case
I now get a new error

In the SLD you can download from the OS there should be a folder called "OS MasterMap Topography Layer SQL Scripts", in there check out the Readme.txt:
The text files within this folder contain SQL scripts for Oracle databases loaded with OS MasterMap Topography Layer.
They look for various combinations of descriptiveTerm and descriptiveGroup values in the OS MasterMap Topography database and then create a new OS_CAT column which is populated with the required values that the OS MasterMap Topography Layer Style Layer Descriptor's (SLD's) will use so that the the relevant symbol for that feature is displayed.
Also, you will need the folder of SVG symbols on the server as well.

If you can I would change the database but I understand that is harder than changing the SLD.
So change the fields in the SLD to uppercase and try it. BUT if you reload the style at a later date it will stop working again. Hence, might be better to make the database match the SLD rather than the other way round.

Are you loading the data from Postgres? If so I suspect it is the field names in the database are upper case and the SLD is expecting lower case. (I have been there myself)

That does look like the filename is incorrect. I have not seen TopoArea.sld so I do not know if it compatible. Try copying and pasting the content into a new style and see how you go?
