Andrea - is there any material difference between wmsgetfeatureinfo and 
wfs getfeature with suitable bbox? I would rather use wfs as dont really 
want html. I am minimizing server calls with delays on how long mouse is 
stationary before a request is issued etc.

Chris, my utf grid is interesting but my understanding is that works 
best for polygons (large area return same value). I am want to use it 
for dense point and line datasets, where labelling the features on the 
map is not really possible. I want to tool tip to help users identify a 
point or line. My click handler returns a pretty large about of info - 
just want to show id. The utfgrid key would be huge.
