This morning I was chatting with Francesco and he was reporting a
serious performance issue with his instance of GeoServer, basically
each GetFeature request took a long time to respond and forced over 300
feature types to be disposed of (every time).

I've opened this ticket with my guess-analysis of the problem:

It seems to me it could related to what Bart is seeing
