Documentation for your platform helps, really. The more you have at your disposal, the better. The next most important step would be getting a working toolchain for your target platform. For this, I recommend just grabbing the uClibc toolchain builder from: http://uclibc.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/toolchain/ and letting it do it's magic.
