Ian, it is unclear what you are really trying to do. Do you want a complete normal running ganglia with some separate java rrd4j thing able to separately extract/graph rrd data popupulated by ganglia? If so, the key data source to parse is connecting to the gmetad server's port 8651 which dumps the current grid state as XML. Or do you want to replace 1 or more ganglia components? Or... ?
