Hello,

the attached patch cleans up some things and adds
support for newer libtool and autoconf. You have to
manually run 'libtoolize --copy' and 'autoconf' after
applying the patch, though.

    thanks a lot for these changes; they are certainly an
    improvement. If you have no objection I'll add them in the
    next release.
