@zxMarce I think that I've finally worked out how to post to Gambas. It's been years since I did it and the email address has changed. You can email me on joh...@gm... I've not tried the FIALKA (post war?). Lorenz is purely Gambas. It's modified from the original in that some characters are not available or difficult to use, as the original used a teleprinter whereas I'm using standard GUI constructs. Colossus calls a set of command line modules (written in Ada by a German guy, whose name escapes me and whose email address I've not found and who won a prize offered by Bletchley Park a few years ago): I have the sources for those modules and I used the gnat Ada compiler, installed using Synaptic on Ubuntu. I'm happy to provide all Gambas & Ada sources & Gambas 'binaries', together with sample messages including the one used by the German guy: both the original and my adapted one where I changed certain keyboard characters. I offered the Cypher stuff to the 2 Bletchley Park museums but they weren't interested. I did give them to the Computing History Museum in Cambridge a few years ago as I also got them working on a Raspberry Pi (of which they had a few) but I don't know if they used them: the guy I met there seemed to be preparing for a job interview and his attention span was short! |

John,
I'd be delighted to see your WWII cypher work, especially the Lorenz.
Are you sharing the sources or the binaries?
Also, on cypher machines: Anything about the Russian FIALKA ("violet")?
I think its codename was M-125 (http://www.cryptomuseum.com/crypto/fialka/).
Thanks!
zxMarce.

I used to put my Gambas developed apps on a particular website. However, I've now lost its URL. Does anyone know the URL of such a site? I have a number of Gambas apps. I've just changed my iRecorder app (which uses the get_iplayer command line program) to operate better. This app is a GUI to record BBC TV & radio programmes. At the moment I just create a .deb as I use Ubuntu mainly. I have a number of other Gambas apps e.g. Enigma cyphering, Bombe simulation, Lorenz cyphering, Colossus simulation, Stream Recording. All my apps are free of charge. If anyone's interested, post to the user list: though I only look at the daily digest. -- John |

Hi List, I've not found a solution to not being able to access my postgres database with gambas 3.11, so I need to be able to downgrade to say 3.8.4 or 3.9 or therabouts which I know runs. I've even tried installing mint on a new machine and the same problem - an error message when I try and log on 'connection is not static'. I wonder if any kind soul could explain to me how to downgrade to an earlier version. Thanks Richard |

Does the same code work in a C program? It seems like waitpid() is just what
you need to do after PTRACE_ATTACH, but anyway I'd say it's a good idea to
develop the low-level bits in C first, so that we're sure it's the translation
to Gambas which is faulty, and not the algorithm.
Three other remarks:
* I'm certainly not running a random somebody's buggy program as root.
Can't you spawn a child process yourself and then use PTRACE_TRACEME
for debugging purposes? That shouldn't require root privileges.
* You should also check return values of system calls.
* THIS MAILING LIST IS DEPRECATED. USE THE NEW ONE: https://lists.gambas-basic.org/listinfo/user

Tobi

Hello, i implemented a ptrace and waitpid external functions in order to read/write a memory address of a process. i want to make a trainer for a game in gambas and i created a small program that reads and writes to a memory process. The problem is that when i try to write to memory it freezes at waitpid line. i attach the test program you have to 1) open it as root 2) run a process you want to hack and get the pid 3) scan memory with scanmem and locate an address you want to write. 4) run my test program and see it freezes. Any help? |

No. It's still state machine. Everything is done instruction by instruction. If no "quantum instructions" are used, it behaves just like normal computer. It would be much like some instruction set extension (like SSE etc). So, maybe some clever optimizations for multi-threading, but no fundamental difference. now if the machine are quantum based? umm that's may change all? Most people don't ask for clarification when they believe there's an insult in there. My foul attitude comes from the belief that the original poster was insulting me which he explained he used terminology that apparently did not cross over from whatever culture to whatever culture. Although I do stand by my thought that programmers just have bad attitudes on all sides. Thank you for your information I have a lot of stuff to look up to try to get that together.
