Yes, I longed for multiple top-level nodes because I had in mind some disparate parts of tree while searching for connection.
But as Eric noted one note will certainly do: just switch all the first-level children to the right side and on the left side place only temporary nodes (or one 'temp' node with children) and move it to the right once you found the connector.
This is just the example that worked for me.
