I successfully installed FreeDOS 1.3 RC5 from the LiveCD (on a VirtualBox VM hosted by Ubuntu 20.04).
Now, when I want to install extra software, I can do so with the LiveCD, but fdimples does not recognize the BonusCD when it is mounted.
Am I missing some environment variable or configuration element, or is this an odd bug?
Last minute changes to the contents of the Bonus CD caused it to no longer be identified as a vaild package source. The issue was discovered shortly after the release of RC5 and FDIMPLES was updated to be able to identify the disc. You can download the latest version of FDIMPLES or just the binary from the GitLab FreeDOS Archive.
Thank you.
Installing the latest version did fix the issue.
Your welcome. Thanks for the feedback. :-)
To Shidel,
Hi, my name is Shian,
I would like to contribute a new version of the Euphoria Programming Language 3.1.1 at:
https://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/distributions/1.2/repos/pkg-html/euphoria.html
(If possible...).
I've never used any Git[X] before or a similar platform, and I'm really not familiar with it.
The current version of Euphoria is 3.1.1, and I'd like to offer version 3.2.0 with bigger standard library and improved IDE. (no changes to Euphoria 3.1.1, only additional features).
You can see and download Euphoria version 3.2.0 from: http://www.rapideuphoria311.com/
Can you help me with this issue?
Thank you,
shian
Hello Shian,
I understand you are new to Git and similar versioning systems. So, I think your request to join the FD-NLS translation project on GitLab was possibly a mistake. You probably meant fot that to be in Euphoria. However, there a couple ways to handle updating those pacakge versions. One method, is to create a fork of the package to your GitLab account. Then, you can make any changes and experiment on that fork. Eventually, you would then issue a pull request to the original package. Another way, would be to work in a branch of the main repository. Then, when ready issue a merge request to the master/main branch. The first method requires no special access privileges. The second would require Developer level access. Both methods are acceptable and mostly comes down to which is easier to do.
I updated the version to 3.2.0 on GitLab. So, the next release will include it. Eventually, I'll update the package on ibiblio.
On the other hand... If you intended to join the FD-NLS project to assist in translations, that is great as well. However, the version on GitLab is only a mirror. The FD-NLS project is maintained on GitHub at https://github.com/shidel/fd-nls and not on GitLab. Unfortunately do to the limited way GitHub handles permissions and access, that repository is limited to the fork and pull request method of updating by contributors.
Thanks a lot Shidel !
Thank you for updating Euphoria to version 3.2.0 on GitLab !
You are right, I didn't intend to join the FD-NLS project, (although it's not a bad idea), but I'm really new here, so I lost the way.
We could reduce Euphoria 3.2.0's package size a bit more by removing two directories from the Zip file, if possible:
Since Japi library is not available for DOS, but the source files were included unnecessarily, so this can save a bit space.
I assume that working on a branch of the main repository is OK, yet right now, due to the fact that GitLab is completely new to me, and that my internet connection is currently going through hard times, I may need your help a bit, if possible (just to remove japi_win and japi_nix sub-directories, I'm not aware of something else).
I will try to learn how to use GitLab and if possible to get Developer level access to the branch, so I can update the Euphoria project in the future. In any case, is there any proper forum to contact you?
Thank you very much,
Shian.
I removed those two directoies.
Sounds good.
For now, I just sent a "Guest" invite to https://gitlab.com/FreeDOS/devel/euphoria.
When you become more familiar with using GitLab, I'll increase the permissions. :-)
Generally, I can be contactedthe developer forum. You can sign up the on the FreeDOS website at Forums. Also, by email. My email is listed on the same page under the how to get a slack invite.
Thanks a lot !
Hi,
Sorry about using FDIMPLES section for asking about Euphoria. (I tried to contact someone and lost the way in this Git complex. Just now I begin to understand how Git works, or actually what it is).
BTW, I assume that any cdrom driver used by freedos\bin\cdrom.bat must be installed by default in freedos\bin directory - otherwise it's impossible to access the LiveCD (installation media) with FDIMPLES...
I'm talking especially about ELTORITO.SYS which is not present in freedos\bin by default, but this is true about any other driver. (I didn't see it before since I used USB to install FreeDOS).
P.s. Sayswho is a great game. It focuses on senses rather than intellect. 5 stars.
shian.
