Thanks, that's a smart workaround, but I don't want to do that for the whole bunch of characters. And I think it is not a solution because I expect this giving errors for my purpose since its all double curves.

Here’s something that sounds like a good work-around:

If I understand it correctly, the trick is to duplicate the open path and connect the two halves, then move the duplicate half back right on top of the original half.
