In my mind, a "font without thickness" as you wrote, will not show up on the screen or in print. Any visible line, even the thinnest one, has a certain width, so it can be represented by a closed path. And because you can define an EM space of many thousands of units, there’s hardly a limit to how thin the font can be. Hope that helps.
