If you don't want to get involved with git or HEAD files,
Can you start with this instead?
https://github.com/fontforge/fontforge/releases  (ver20140101).
This version still uses:
sh autogen.sh
./configure
make
sudo make install

The HEAD branch uses bootstrap and a few things changed ...I'm not 100% 
certain it works with other users since I already see someone mention 
problems with building from cygwin.
