If I may intervene with the experience on the other side: Another cross platform flightsim uses a preset scene to render the aircraft icon/thumbnail (they have a dedicated menu entry to update the icons, which switches the simulator to the preset scene and takes a screenshot with alpha around the aircraft shape. This is done either by the developer at publish time or by the user at any time for the aircraft they have installed on their system) The result is a very consistent appearance of the aircraft selection screen, and also the icons/thumbnails contain only relevant information (the aircraft shape/livery) making them easy to pick out visually.
