Right, this is very easy to add, and low risk.
The other use-case you mentioned, carriers, is a bit interesting: it makes me think we want ‘self-contained scenarios’ with some models, flightplans, scenario XML, etc.
I’ve got no problem making the system accept arbitrary scenarios (via a —scenario command line switch, providing a path to the XML).
If the scenarios are generic, we also have the option of adding them to the package system, they could then be managed the same way if we wanted. I.e in the FGUK hangar, download some carriers as well as the regular aircraft; it would also be possible to use the package dependency mechanism to link these, so downloading a Seafire or Buccanner downloads a corresponding carrier alongside.
(That would be more work, but if people are interested in helping, it’s some fairly simple changes in a few places, eg the catalog generation scripts and the launcher UI)
