Enhanced runway lighting is already not too bad on my ATI card. I get 
the same framerate with and without it enabled (not too good, but at 
least it does not get worse). So I'd say it's safe to enable 
GL_POINT_SPRITE. Note: this is using the fglrx driver. Don't know about 
the DRI driver.
