The space shuttle has been in orbit and controllable via telemetry for twenty years. Unpiloted or remotely piloted vehicles are a part of the army's inventory. The communications portion of this can be done securely, I have no doubt, and it has been demostrated for a long time. The point of failure here (the weakest link) would probably be the ground based facility where the controlling pilot would be. Perhaps it could be on a military base. The point of all my discussions about ground override would be - as I state in later emails - to provide an option for FBW aircraft a last-resort method to prevent an airliner from being used as a cruise missile. |
