They still follow the slope, just not the absolute elevation.  Some
day, when graphics cards are better and programmers have more time, we
will want to adjust the elevation of many surface types: forests
should be raised at least 10-20m above their nominal height, grassy
fields should be raised about 20cm, roads and railroads should often
be on gentle embankments to allow drainage, etc.
