Founded in 1997, FlightGear is developed by a worldwide group of volunteers, brought together by a shared ambition to create the most realistic flight simulator possible that is free to use, modify and distribute. FlightGear is used all over the world by desktop flight simulator enthusiasts, for research in universities and for interactive exhibits in museums.

FlightGear features more than 400 aircraft, a worldwide scenery database, a multi-player environment, detailed sky modelling, a flexible and open aircraft modelling system, varied networking options, multiple display support, a powerful scripting language and an open architecture. Best of all, being open-source, the simulator is owned by the community and everyone is encouraged to contribute.

  • it`s ok. I mean it´s free. You can make you own plane or download one from the web.
  • Amazing project. Needs some polish. I was just going to give up on it, since there wasn't really any scenery for my neck of the woods, until I enabled osm2city generated scenery. Seriously, this should be the default! VFR flying desperately needs something visual, besides an airport and random textures. Otherwise an enduring fan of this project. Also the Appimage packaging for Linux really takes the guesswork out of the install.

  • For a free, flight simulator this is amazing! Works great on almost every setup. It is beautiful looking. The plane's controls are easy to learn. The planes are accurately detailed (eg. Cessna) and the physics are really realistic. As you are probably saying MSFS is better, and indeed MSFS is better but with a cost. For being completely free, this is amazing!
  • I'm a long-time MS "flier", and I ran across FlightGear and gave it a try on my older laptop that can't nearly handle FS 2020, and I gotta say, I'm blown away at the solid, open-source sim that this has become! Look...it ain't FS 2020, but if your want to take to the skies in a Cessna (or variety of other planes, some of which aren't perfect), then this is hard to beat. The 172 was instantly familiar and everything worked the way I expected. My old Thrustmaster joystick worked with no hassles. I love the scenery auto-download feature. I haven't tried multiplayer or a lot of the other features, but I'm really enjoying it so far. The controls seem a little more...quick? harsh? than in MSFS, but honestly, they're closer to the response of a real plane than MSFS. Landing seems "harder" in FlightGear than in MSFS, but that's because landing *is* harder than in MSFS. Kudos to the developers of this. I think you've made something really special.
