IIRC last time when the file name of fb odbc driver changed, the then developer needed to ask for consent from the firebird team. I have never used Visual Foxpro, but if it uses odbc (not .net) for firebird, then I believe the 2.0 branch is the best open source fb odbc driver that you can get. IMO it even better than other commercial dirvers. It works both for fb 1.5 and fb 2.0. It is "beta" just because the author did not feel the need to tag it as "stable". OTOH the 1.x branch do work with unicode and many features/bug fixes were not back ported from 2.0. In short, just use the 1.2 branch. Thanks, but why do you recommend that? I wasn't going to blindly download the file, so I went to the Red Soft site and it appears they have their own database server based on Firebird. Can I assume the ODBC driver you suggest will work with Firebird 1.5 as well as their version? And is it even an ODBC driver or were you recommending the database server itself (which is not an option in this case)? I don't mean to appear ungrateful, but if I'm going to branch out to a third party developer I'd just like to know a little bit about that company, their reputation, and the reputation of their products. I will research that myself, but if you have any thoughts on that, I'd appreciate hearing them, too. Thanks again. -----Original Message----- From: Jorge Andrés Brugger [mailto:li...@da...] Sent: Wednesday, October 15, 2008 1:00 PM To: fir...@li... You lost me a bit . . . I probably should have been clearer about my familiarity with Firebird. I've not used it before at all. If you are indeed asking me a question about Firebird, you'll most likely not get an answer worth a flip from me. :~) If, on the other hand, you have an answer to my question, I'd certainly be appreciative. Hi Do you have any plans to develope dynamic and keyset cursors for the odbc driver? They are particulary usefull in vb and access. Heine |

I think that it is necessary to publish the last Odbc driver on the official site (http://firebirdsql.org), but there are some troubles with it :-) . For an official site it is required to fix and build the windows installer still. I have many tasks in my main development area in the Red Soft now and therefore i have question to Paul Reeves. Paul, you are the developer of the original code of the windows installer. Can you to correct an installer build at least for win32 platform now? I tried to build an installer but there are no required files (used in MakePackage.bat) in the Install\Win32\ directory. Please explain to me how i can to build Odbc windows installer from CVS?. Guys, I had upgraded my development server to 2.1.1, now I am in trouble with Crystal Reports (ODBC Connection). I use a pretty old Crystal Report version (version 7). Everything always worked like a charm with ODBC and FB (Beta 0.9, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) now 2.1 has "problems", another guy have the same problem with FireRuby Driver (reported on fb-support) Dmitry Yemanov replied that FB 2.1 has a stricter checking on TPB values and that is some bug on FireRuby driver. I have no choice in Crystal Reports to set any kind of parameter in TPB. Any ideas how can I try to solve this ? I had looked on ODBC trace log, but did not understand the details (like when it's defining the TPB values, and with which values) If I send the ODBC log someone could take a look on it ? You can either implement this support yourself - C++ is easy :-) The driver needs cleaning, refactoring and more programmer hands to care about it. Adding keyset/dynamic cursors would be a mid-size project and I would be happy to discuss possible designs. I implemented replication-based dynamic cursors for one middleware project a few years ago. Or as with any other Open Source project you can contract somebody to do the work. > Heine Ferreira -- Nikolay Samofatov, MBA Red Soft International +1 416 710 6854 |

Alexander, Alexander Potapchenko wrote: > If you will see a real example of case with buffer overflow then please > show it. I looked a code and I have not seen potential problems with it. > I have not seen an example of code in OdbcJdbc drivers, because the users of function tend to allocate bigger buffers than necessary for the function to work. However your fix changed the function contract on Windows platform, and buffer overflow is certainly possible if somebody tries to use the function according to standard wcstombs contract as it is defined on Unix. Please fix. Sample code to demonstrate buffer overflow: #include <windows.h> #include <iostream> using namespace std; UINT codePage = CP_ACP; // from Main.cpp size_t WcsToMbs( char *mbstr, const wchar_t *wcstr, size_t count ) { size_t len = WideCharToMultiByte( codePage, 0, wcstr, -1, (LPSTR)mbstr, !mbstr ? 0 : (int)count+1, // +1 by Potapchenko NULL, NULL ); if ( len > 0 ) len--; return len; } int main(int argc, char** argv) { wchar_t wstr[5] = L"test"; struct { char str[4]; char marker; } test; test.marker = 10; cout << "before wcstombs marker=" << (int)test.marker << endl; size_t len = wcstombs(test.str, wstr, sizeof(test.str)); cout << test.str[0] << test.str[1] << test.str[2] << test.str[3] << endl; cout << "after wcstombs marker=" << (int)test.marker << " len=" << len << endl; memset(test.str, 0, sizeof(test.str)); cout << "before WcsToMbs marker=" << (int)test.marker << endl; len = WcsToMbs(test.str, wstr, sizeof(test.str)); cout << test.str[0] << test.str[1] << test.str[2] << test.str[3] << endl; cout << "after WcsToMbs marker=" << (int)test.marker << " len=" << len << endl; } However my sample code doesn't work either. You can look up CRT implementation of wcstombs function, if you want. To make function both efficient on Windows and correct you need consistently change the function contract to receive and return the buffer length including the last terminator zero. This would require changes in Unix function implementation, UTF8 implementation, UNICODE_FSS implementation, and Windows implementation, and all usages in the driver would need to be simplified. Your sample code would turn to much more efficient: wchar_t wstr[5] = L"test"; size_t buffSize = WcsToMbs(NULL, wstr, 0); char* str = new char[buffSize]; buffSize = WcsToMbs(str, wstr, buffSize); // int len = buffSize - 1; -- if ever needed cout << str; The Windows conversion implementation would look as follows in this case: size_t WcsToMbs( char *mbstr, const wchar_t *wcstr, size_t count ) { return WideCharToMultiByte( codePage, 0, wcstr, -1, (LPSTR)mbstr, !mbstr ? 0 : (int)count, NULL, NULL ); } Unix implementation would be something like: size_t WcsToMbs( char *mbstr, const wchar_t *wcstr, size_t buffSize ) { ssize_t len = wcstombs(mbstr, wcstr, buffSize) + 1; if (mbstr && (len >= buffSize || len < 0)) return 0; } You should be able to figure out the changes to remaining two implementations yourself. > Alexander > Thanks! -- Nikolay Samofatov, MBA Red Soft International +1 416 710 6854 |
