Several gnome apps stop crashing once gnome-libs-1.4.1.2-4 from unstable is installed. The following are some of the apps affected. gmc from the mc-4.5.54-2(stable) and mc-4.5.54-3(unstable) packages: Moving mouse over icons on desktop would cause gmc to crash. Gnome Calendar 1.4.0 from gnome-pim-1.4.0-1(unstable) package: Moving mouse over the monthly calendar view caused crash. In its Color preferences, moving the mouse over the sample calendar caused crash. Mahjongg from gnome-games-1.4.0.3-4(stable) package: Moving mouse into window caused crash. panel for gnome (which package?): When setting the icon for a launcher in its properties, moving the mouse over the icon view of pixmaps would cause the properties dialog to crash. There were some others, too, however I hope this gives an example of the type of problems. They seem to be related. In some cases, it seems something to do with the matrix like display of data. Just to clarify, all of these problems (and others like them) causing crashes have been solved after installing gnome-libs-1.4.1.2-4, in my case at least. I haven't noticed any new problems. Some other notes of what I tried before finally installing gnome-libs-1.4. 1.2-4 from unstable, just in case it had an effect. I installed everything in the Depends field of bundle-gnome one at time from the stable section (mostly binary with dselect). At first, I didn't want everything, but eventually I added each one trying to get the other apps to stop crashing. Once I practically had bundle-gnome installed without installing it (which I could of simply done in the beginning), I tried to fix gmc by installing mc-4.5.54-3 from unstable. This had a minor improvement of showing the icons on the desktop, whereas before they were only icon titles, but gmc continued to crash just like before. I researched the gnome website to determine what other basic packages were needed, and I read the fink-users-list and got a couple of clues about gnome-libs, and eventually decided to update the gnome-libs from unstable. Afterwards, I tested everything which would crash and found everything didn't crash anymore and worked fine. Also, something which seems unrelated, gnome terminal seems to work now. It wasn't crashing, however it wouldn't log in. Now it works, too. I had absolutely no problems with anything compiling. Oh, for those trying this to solve similar problems, if you install the gnome-libs-1.4.1.2-4 from unstable it will also want orbit-0.5.12-1 from unstable. So you'll need to copy that from the unstable directory to the local directory also, though if you forget it'll remind you :-). Because of this, I can't really say whether it was gnome-libs, orbit, or both which solved it. But everything works now, and I haven't noticed any new problems. Fink is absolutely great. You all have really simplified everything X related I've installed so far. I still had to research docs and websites and such before installing, as is usual before installing anything on a computer. And sometimes I had to research after installing, which is normal when trying to use the stuff. But documents will always have to be studied. Fink is doing its job by making these packages available for MacOSX, and by making managing them so easy. And chrisp and you guys have really made it that much simpler and doable. All in your spare time, eh? Amazing... -- Thom |
