Aha! That was indeed the reason for all of this.

Yes it is. In gnome-libs configure:

LIBGNOME_LIBS="$ESD_LIBS $AUDIOFILE_LIBS $DB_LIB $GLIB_LIBS $DL_LIB"

and ESD_LIBS is obtained from esd-config.

I'd never have guessed that. Amazing at what remote distance effects 
that SetLIBS had.
