[gnome-core] problem typing '{' and '}' using swiss german keyboard layout

I'm using MacOS X 10.4 with a swiss german keyboard layout. 
I've download fink with gnome applications such as gedit and gimp.

To create { you have to type alt-( and for } alt-), however both of these 
applications return nothing. I've search on the internet and have tried 
several solutions but still didn't work.

I've export LANG=de_DE at the xterm terminal before I start the application, 
but still not working.

For OpenOffice application, the combination alt-apple-( and alt-apple-) will 
produce the output { and }. However it still not working for gedit nor gimp.

What make me confuse is on the xterm I can simply type { and } using  
alt-( and alt-). Its mean that X11 for Mac is working. 

What is the other setting needed to make germany keyboard layout functioning 
on gnome apps?
