okay in my experimental I now have a newer, working dpkg, debconf setup. All tests with fink -m build work and pass, including everything for update-alternative. I did however remove some of the patch from Sjors version, and honestly I don't' understand why it was there, from what I can tell we were forcing dpkg to run do_script with a null value, the comments say that fink needs the effects from it. I couldn't not see why or what effects, not to mention that entire process changed lots from 1.15 to 1.16 so I removed it and everything seems fine. If someone knows why it was there or a way to test if the new version even still requires it please let me know. To see debconf in action, install it and then run dpkg-reconfigure debconf it installs with defaults so that it won't break unattended builds. --- TS http://www.southofheaven.org/ Life begins and ends with chaos, live between the chaos!
