Hi, just as a small remark, I for one would be interested in seeing us move to the latest apt & dpkg -- provided that doesn't cause major regressions, of course. Don't we already backport various fixes and improvements that they made? One of the "new" features (a couple years old by now, actually) that I'd like to see is support for "~" in version strings (the tilde sorts before everything else, so the version "1.0~rc" would come *before* "1.0", which is very handy. I emailed about that here in the past, actually ;). Adding support to fink is trivial, but pointless as long as our dpkg doesn't support it). Regarding the .info file issues: My stance is that *in theory* Sjors is right, it would be preferable to fix "broken" packages to work with the new install-info instead of tweaking install-info. On the long run, that should make it easier to follow upstream dpkg / apt changes. However, this is based on the assumption that only a handful of packages have issues with the install-info -- if I understand Sjors, then it should be only about 7 *potentially* problematic packages. In that case, I still wonder if it is possible to fix each *actually affected* package in a way that (a) does not affect its functionality, and (b) works with both old and new .dpkg ? If so, I see no major obstacle, at least with regards to info docs. Of course there might be further issues regarding other stuff. Cheers, Max |
