I suffered a small computing meltdown recently which, unfortunately, seemed to have resulted in some of the files in my X11 installation getting scotched. (Morale of the story, if you use Apple's DVD Player application, never leave it on "pause" for an extended period of time -- this is not the first time that having done so has resulted in damage to my file system for some reason or other.) Anyway, I needed to re-install Apple's X11 Beta 3 to fix the problem. When I went to Apple's site to get the packages (I had saved the packages, but only on backup media stored off-site), I discovered of course that they no longer provide access to the Beta versions of the X11 server, only the v1.0 release package. *And the v1.0 package doesn't install on pre-Panther versions of the OS, of course.* If you're using 10.2.x, and Apple's X11, then I recommend that you make sure you have a backup of the User package and SDK package *now*, because finding copies of these will be harder and harder to find. (Currently, planetmirror still has copies of the Beta 3 versions of these packages, but I have no idea how long they'll have them, and the site is very busy.) So, get those packages and store them in a safe place, unless you're going to update to Panther some time soon. (I have my update ordered through my company's purchasing department, so lord knows how many weeks will pass before I get it.) The alternative in this case would be using Fink's X11 packages or some other provider of XFree or an X server for MacOSX, I suppose. -- Viktor Haag : Software & Information Design : Research In Motion +--+ Disclaimer mandated by employer: "This transmission may contain confidential or privileged material.
