I get those assertions too (10.3.9, xcode-1.5) both running yelp directly and when yelp is invoked from the Help menu of gnome apps. But then yelp runs without crashing. Either 10.4 is different in how it handles those assertions or the actual crash (bus error) is actually caused by something else.
