I didn't see it mention anything about Fink specifically. I think the 
solution I will suggest might help in more cases.

  If at all possible, edit the Makefile and add these to the flages that 
the compiler will recieve

-L/sw/lib -I/sw/include

that's an uppercase i in the second one.

Hope that helps, and I'm sure someone will add to what I have suggested.
