Andy & Folks, I regret to say that the pace of my work will be slowing down drastically after October 5th, since I will be investing in the final year of my CS degree scheme. I will be able to spare approx. 8 hrs a week after this time on coding and administration issues. After I graduate, I would be more than willing to take the reins again. In the mean time, between then and now I intend to do set the following deadlines for myself: August 15th - GENERAL deadline for Eric Spec. August 30th - ABSOLUTE deadline for Eric Spec. Sept. 15th - GENERAL deadline for Process Scheduler. Oct. 5th - ABSOLUTE deadline for Process Scheduler, (need it for thesis). I have got many things in the pipeline at the moment, some of which need to be prioritized, some of which need to be cast away. Wish me luck, chaps. All the best, Gavin. |

Folks, Some new docs have been uploaded to our project documentation space. Hopefully you should be seeing them under 'general' after some time. All the best, Gavin. PS. I have a feeling that either I am losing it, or there is something funny going on with sourceforge.net at the moment. |

I have made the first Eric logo for the website. Chaps, The kernel interface guide, jointly written by OSF and Carnegie Mellon, is now available on the root directory of eric.sourceforge.net. The guide is the closest thing to an Eric specification as you can get right now. (The final specification will be a cut-down redraft of this 100-page tome). I would strongly recommend getting it downloaded, printed and spiral-bound. All the best, Gavin. |

Ram, Do you know what is going on with CMU's website? are they having their webserver rebuilt or something? If you could do me a big favour and give 'em a call, that would be great thanx. All the best, Gav. |

Dudes, I have just got this nice CD labelling kit, and it has occurred to me that we could have some well 'groovy', (Austin Powers Alert!), designs for the final Eric CD. Please feel free to submit links to cool ethnic, impressionist, or floral designs. And yes, I am getting somewhat ahead of myself... 8-(|:-) All the best, Gav. |

Dudes, I have thought of a nice theme for our OS, one in keeping with the New Age vision. Here's a quote from the Xerox-PARC paper just submitted: "In an information-rich world, the limiting quantity for users isn't so much the information in the world as the user's own limited time. Just as animals forage for food and try to optimize their food rate of gain, users often seek strategies to optimize their information gain per unit time and in fact, we can make the analogy literal by thinking of the Web in terms of Information Foraging Theory [1], an analogue of foraging models from ecological biology [2]"... We could use this paradigm thoughout our entire distributed OS development! It could be the most EXCELLENT running thread, one which lay-people can hook onto, rather than all this abstract, airy corporate bolx. Man, we could build the principles of Nature herself into this OS!! Yours, Gavin. |

Dudes, I have found the most excellent site: http://www.acm.org/pubs/articles/proceedings/chi/238386/p111-card/p111-card. html If the link works, it gives a full description of Xerox's WebForager interface. btw, it would a really cool idea if we could build our own version of this. Any modern OS needs a browser anyhow, and I think that what we could do, is to have a 'browser interface', (similar idea to Internet Explorer interface), only in 3D. In fact, one cannot rule out that our whole document interface be in this form of 3D bookshelf interface. It would be a good deal better than having multiple overlapping windows, and lots of annoying pointing and clicking... All the best, Gavin. |

There is only an ftp server for releases. If you use the scp server you can copy the files to the web space. There is documentation on the sourceforge website on scp. Folks, Does anyone know any links to sites giving detailed information as regards DLL format and architecture? I have managed to find the API calls at MSDN, but doubt that I can get hold of the low-level stuff... BTW. The reason I am asking this, is that I am interested in incorporating the same technology into the Eric Console, perhaps .ecl files? (Eric-Console-Library.. <|;-) Thanks, Gavin. |

Folks, Anyone out there an expert in Hard-Drive ghosting in Linux? I need a quick and simple way of backing up most of my data to CD-R. All the best, Gavin. |
