#32 syntax checker

Hi, I found EditArea while researching for a customizable syntax-checker for a specific rule-based ITS. It looks and works pretty good, however I need more then color highlighting: syntax check for instance.
I was thinking as a first step to somehow add a function so that non-defined elements (elements that are not keywords, operators, variables etc) to appear with a yellow background.
Did anyone try to do something similar? Could you point me in the right direction?
