abilty to apply arbitrary css style to the code above regular syntax highlightting

I was thinking of an array of { pos_start, pos_end, css_class } as input.
I intend to use it to add warning/error/info/todo/etc marks, like Eclipse does ( c.f. attached image )

( This request echoes one made via mail a few months ago - I don't intend to bug you; just to trace the feature request )
