Firstly, I'd like to say that I am quite interested in this project and I would like to participate in its development.
I am relatively new at programming and moreso at open source development.
Could anyone please point me in the right direction? Where would I get assignments to complete for the project, and how/where would I have to submit them?

This project (EDGE) is no longer under development. The 1.35 release was the very last one.
But there is another person making their own version called 3DGE or HyperEdge,
maybe you could help that project. See http://edge2.sourceforge.net or make a post
