From the last standing Risk II(Micropose) and DXWnd did not work together, but DXWnd has been contually been developed.
And now the Question is if one could use those two applications together as in Risk II running on the Desktop in Windowed mode and one could get the Cursor outside the Window, which is/was the main problem. You cannot Alt+Tab in Risk II. So running it in Windowed mode is the only solution, if it would work.
Now the Question is: How to properly configure DXWnd to work with Risk II.
And if it does not, would using a virtualization work to get Risk to run side by side with the Desktop?

This version of Risk is working with default settings, but it may not be the one you are talking about (Microprose and not Hasbro?)
Should I look for another one?
gho, can you tell me where i can either buy or download the hasbro version? since the micropose one does not work with dxwnd...i want to play risk II but still be able to do other things since the current state on warzone is, if you play risk II you cant alt tab or the game freezes etc...

... googling with right keywords?
But I didn't pay too much attention to this Hasbro/Microprose version after I found that the splash screen of the version I tested has a Microprose copyright, shown right before the Hasbro reference. I thought we were talking about the very same game. Isn't it? Maybe I was mislead....
If it's not the same one, you could also tell me where to buy / download the Microprose version, so that I can check if it is possible to handle your game version with dxwnd.

Very strange ....
The "Microprose" version (but it seems the very same game, it's just maybe more recent and filled with more intro and advertising stuff...) seems to work with default settings, but in the main game screen, moving the mouse, it alternates a good behaviour with a bad one (see shots). Is it the same problem you have?
Uhm... I made a small fix for this problem, but I have to test it to be sure it has no side effects or collateral damages on other games.
But in any case, in no emulation mode (that is, emulation set to "None") the game runs smoothly and without problems.
So, back to the original question: why did you say "Risk II(Micropose) and DXWnd did not work together" ??? Maybe it's siply time for another try ....

because i tested it and nothing worked, i try it again, right now. i will post after im finished, but im certain the micropose version, which seems to be the only allowed on warzone, does not function correctly with DXWnd.

either way, tell me what settings i need to make and how to properly configure dxwnd for risk II, please? then i test it again.
i can run it in windowed mode now, but when i click outside of the window the music stops, if i do that in a online match, it might cause it to malfunction, gho, can you join Warzone (e-warzone.com) and test it with me? although to completly start 3 players are required...

Unfortunately no: I'm currently at work....
But DxWnd settings are default ones, plus (just in case of the "bad" screen behaviour) setting in the DirectX config tab the radio button for emulation to "None"). In order to have the game unaware of clicking outside, you must also check "Do not notify on task switch"on the main tab.
Or just import the attached export file and update the game path according to your settings.
Have a good party....
Hi.
The fix I introduced in release v2_03_02 is not compatible with some other game.
So I released a quick v2_03_03 new version that makes this hack configuable in the DirectX tab.
Be aware that if you want to use this new version, Risk II needs the "Fix surface pitch" flag set.

Nice finding. The game was working ok now on my pc also without the fix (the games always have a sixth sense and they feel the danger when you get close to fixing a bug of theirs, so they start working better!) but I trust you. Here is an updated export with some things fixed and the bordered window that allow moving and stretching the game window. But I strongly suggest to also use the OpenGL renderer (see DirectX Tab , Renderer checklist) that greately improves the video quality.
P.s. I have now only the Hasbro version, but I hope it's going to work with Micriprose as well. Could you report about that?
Sorry to Necro this old thread, but I'm trying to get this to work with no avail. I'm using DXWnd v2.05.92, I configured the thingy with the .dxw from the last reply from gho, attached it to the Risk exe, but to no avail :/ I try to run and simply nothing at all happens :/

dude, it says micropose right on the link, i can get that everywhere, what i asked for was the hasbro version
https://ia902501.us.archive.org/14/items/Risk_II_MicroProse_Eng/Risk%20II%20-%20Cover.jpg ????
i still dont know where to get the real hasbro version, since that one seems to be the only one which can be used with DXWnd?
also i did find one link from demonoid, but no seeders...

google "risk 2 the iso zone".
But later I'll try DxWnd on the Microprose version.

The solution to this bad screen problem with the Micropose version is checking the "Support offscreen 3D" checkbox on the DirectX tab.
Enjoy and play with us on Gameranger!!

Ok, please report about current status. Here, on my pc and single player mode, the game works perfectly.

I found the solution to the bad ingame screen problem. Go to the direct X tab and select support offscreen 3D.
This works with the Micropose version!!!

gosh, 3 days and no answers ... I'll put this next in my list.
no rush :) thanks for taking a look!
I guess that your problem looks like this one isn't it? If so, this is not good news, at least at the moment. It's a long aged problem ...
