With Win 7 I had no problems in running this game (and other AC titles) windowed with DxWnd. But now that I moved on to Win 10, I can still launch the game but it will not do that windowed. Basically: I get the game in a smaller resolution/windows, but the remaining of the desktop/screen is black... (so in practise fullscreen).
Reason why I need this: if I want to debug with Cheat Engine, I need to swap between the 2 apps; and that won't work as the AC game will lock... the screen/window/desktop once the breakpoint hits...
Until now, I was using v2.004.59; then downloaded/ran latest release (with the same result: game shows up - in upleft corner - with remaining window blackened).
FYI: after some googling 'How to run Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag in Windowed Mode youtube', I was able to run AC in windowed mode, allowing me to do "my stuff". But I'm confident that DxWnd could be configured in a similar way; unfortunately not my cup of tea, so counting on your expertise... :)
(I would prefer continue using DxWnd because of plethora of options; in particular setting preferred resolution)

Time is NOT of the essence here :), since I can get away with the other tool. Just make sure to check out the youtube movie first; I'm sure it'll ring a bell on your side...
ps: a) both flags have to be set so one can Alt+Tab comfortably b) you must disable both flags first before you can kill the process...

ps: I rarely post links these days, as they are bound to break eventually (hence the search string). I had watched the 1st one, but it seems 2nd/3rd pretty much tell the same story...

Uhm, I fear I'll have to collect some HD space before making a try. Stay tuned, the challenge is interesting, but I can't do that quite soon.

I will be happy to watch. Could you post the youtube link when available? It seems yours is not the only Assassin's Creed IV movie on the web ... ;)
