I bought the gog.com version and would love to play it in a windowed mode. Anyone have a working setting for dxwnd to catch it? I can't seem to find a combination that works. It always just goes straight into full-screen mode.
Thanks!

I just tested LoM SE from old Sierra distribution: it works perfectly with standard settings (emulate primary surface, correct mouse position and nothing else).
Unfortunately I know GOG is attaching to their distributions some embedded windower or directx hooker that alter the program's behaviour and requires a different DxWnd setup, when not make it impossible for DxWnd to work.
I cannot say more without a copy of the GOG release. If you just want to make something not quite illegal, I think you may upload to me just the game exe: that's not enough to say you distributed a copy of the game (it's just a tiny piece of the full distribution), but may suffice to me to have a look and suggest a possible setting.
Otherwise, I saw that several GOG games are hooked to use d3d9: you may try setting directx emulation to DirectX9 and see what happens...
Good luck

Nevermind, I borrowed a copy of the game just to make a few tests.
The GOG release of LoM SE seems to work with DxWnd, though there are some problems that seem generic and shared with other games on this platform:
1) when Win7 alters the program compatibility settings DxWnd is no longer able to start it
2) while playing intro movies the application is not responding and doesn't listen to keyboard events (that's a problem because you can't keep watching the whole intro all times!)
3) if you "touch" the window (i.e. minimize and restore it) the game may resume working correctly (or crash....)
4) things change setting administrator privileges to the game, or DxWnd, or both.
So I think I need to understand these problems a little better: Win7 seems a much more different platform that its predecessors: at least, on XP setting compatibility modes usually improves the situation, doesn't turn it worse. If anyone wants to help, he'll be welcome.

Some mysteries become revealed....
the origin of the "dumb" window problem seem to lie in the "Default IME" window that is overlapped on top of the game main window. Why this happens and why apparently on Win7 alone is still unclear, but at least it gives a clue about a possible fix.

in win7 user access is more restricted and configured.
in short you need to run dxwnd with admin permission (rights) if game set to compatibility mode (as it set game for admin rights in this way).

Hi ghotik,
It's been a few years since this tread started, but I was hoping there was some progress made with this particular game, as I too would prefer playing it in windowed mode.
Dxwnd has helped me play Imperisalism 2 (by GOG) in windowed mode previously - and it was awesome!
Can we repeat the success here as well?

I'll be happy to help you.
But the game runs just fine with no interventions. Adding a Input / "Message pump" option is recommended to stop the intro movies, but not mandatory. I made a fresh install, hooked the lomse.exe file and that was it on my Win10 pc. It could be that some of the old problems were overcamed in latest releases.
If this is not your case, you should add some more details about the nature of your problems.
Glad to have you on board!
I'm basically having the same problem as the OP.
Fresh install of GoG LoMSE on my Win7 64bit & freshly unpacked v2_03_95_build to it's own directory.
Started dxdwnd, hooked lomse.exe but the game insists on running fullscreen.
I've played around with the numerous options but can't get it to go to windowed mode.
What other details/tests would you need from me?

Usually I need some logs, but in this case I wouldn't be surprised if you found none.
Before entering into technical stuff, we'd better eliminate the possibility of a trivial problem about permissions and/or compatibility. I saw this type of problems many times with GOG games that are installed with a pre-assigned compatibility setting that interferes with DxWnd operations.
I would suggest you to perform these operations:
1) assign DxWnd administrator privileges (right-click on DxWnd.exe, Properties->Compatibility->check "run this program as administrator" or whatever is your locale translation). I always try to set this flag in the DxWnd distribution, but a simple file copy can clear it.
2) clear compatibility on lomse.exe (again, Properties->Compatibility->uncheck all compatibility flags). Maybe it could be better use DxWnd command for that (Tools->Clear compatibility flags, apparently this one goes a little deeper and clears some possibly hidden flags). If you clear compatibility flags it is likely that the game will no longer run in fullscreen without DxWnd, so maybe you can perform the operation on a copy of the lomse.exe file.
I believe that this way the game should work, but in case id won't let mi know, I'll give you instructions about how to capture some meaningful logs.

No further instructions neccessary, I'm good - DxWnd is doing it's thing as expected.
Sorry to trouble you with this trivial problem, but I have also learned a few things myself.
Cheers!
