This is exactly what I'm looking for --- it's just a shame I have to use 
spumux. I've managed to avoid this so far. (My DVD will have no softbuttons 
or video.) Am I right in assuming that I can only define actions for the 
directional keys?

And why are the actions defined in spumux, not in dvdauthor, which is where I 
would have expected it to be?

(Actually, I really want to implement this as a VCD or an SVCD rather than a 
DVD; the end result is going to be too small to be worth economically putting 
on a DVD, and DVD-CD support is a bit iffy on most DVD players. For some 
reason, SVCD slide shows are much faster on my player, too.)
